On this occasion of the Twenty-fifth Anniversary, the residents of The
Sequoias, Portola Valley, and the Board of Directors of the Northern California
Presbyterian Homes, Inc.\ are honoring the men and women who first
developed the concept of this retirement community, the members of the
Board of Directors when this home was dedicated on June 18, 1961, and the
pioneer residents who entered in 1961.
This birthday party celebrates the dream that became reality over the
first twenty-five years of outstanding development of The Sequoias,
Portola Valley, one of the early retirements homes in California
especially designed and built for senior citizens.}

\centerline{\bfl The Sequoias' Chronology}
\bigbreak
\item{$\circ$}1956 The idea of establishing a retirement community was
broached at a meeting in Palo Alto. Dr. Ronald T. White, General Presbyter
of the North Coast Area, endorsed the idea. Mr. Raymond L.
Hanson was asked
to visit two retirement homes in Southern California. After his
visits, he recommended that an entirely new community be built. Thus a new
venture was underway. Ray was chairman of the N.C.P.H. at the time
of the Dedication and Ray and Eleanor became Sequoian residents in
1981.
\item{$\circ$}Jan. 17, 1958 The Northern California Presbyterian Homes was
incorporated ``\dots to build and operate, on a non-profit basis, one or
more homes for the elderly \dots''. Dr. White had a role in these
decisions and in the subsequent negotiations for the land and for
retaining architects. In recognition of his valuable contributions to the
founding of The Sequoias, his picture is placed in the Main Lounge.
\item{$\circ$}May 1, 1958 Forty acres of our present site in Portola Valley were
purchased from John Francis Neylan. Mr. Neylan later gave us two
additional acres to round out the site to its present configuration.
\item{$\circ$}Dec. 12, 1958 The F.H.A. gave its initial approval for the grading of
the site.
\item{$\circ$}1959 The N.C.P.H. engaged the architectural firm of
Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill to design The Sequoias, with Mr. John B.
Rodgers, a partner, placed in charge of the overall design of the site
and of the buildings. John and Ruth Rodgers became Sequoian residents
in 1982.
\item{$\circ$}Mar. 28, 1960 The first meeting of an Interim Council of prospective
residents was held.
\item{$\circ$}May 11, 1960 A Ground Breaking Ceremony was held and attended by
many future residents and friends.
\item{$\circ$}June 1, 1961 The first residents started moving in.
\item{$\circ$}June 18,1961 A Dedication Ceremony was held for The Sequoias.
\item{$\circ$}Dec. 7, 1961 First election of officers of the newly-formed
Residents' Association was held (taking office on Jan.1, 1962).
\item{$\circ$}Oct. 21, 1963 An architect was chosen to design our Convalescent
Hospital (usually called the Health Center).
\item{$\circ$}Aug. 18, 1965 Grading for the Health Center was begun.
\item{$\circ$}Dec. 7, 1965 Duplexes 25A and 25B were completed.
\item{$\circ$}June 4, 1966 The Fifth Anniversary was celebrated with the
dedication of the Health Center and with tours arranged of this facility.
\item{$\circ$}June 15, 1967 Conversion of the Main Building was completed with
the conversion of the old infirmary into two guest rooms and one additional
apartment.
\item{$\circ$}July 1, 1976 The Lodge (the Personal-Care Facility) was formally opened.
\item{$\circ$}July 15, 1976 Installation of an additional comprehensive fire
protection system was begun.
\item{$\circ$}1980 Leslie and Dorothy Dobbins became Sequoian residents. Both were
active in promoting the construction of The Sequoias and were
members of the N.C.P.H. Board of Directors at the time of the original Dedication.
\item{$\circ$}Jan. 1983 The Beauty Parlor and Guest Room addition to the
rear of Hanson Hall was completed. The Guest Room has a
connecting door to Hanson Hall so that, when desired, it can serve as a
performing artist's dressing room.
\item{$\circ$}Dec. 9, 1985 The Swimming Pool was dedicated.
\item{$\circ$}May 30 -- June 1, 1986 We celebrate our Twenty-Fifth Anniversary.

An organization meeting of an Interim Council of prospective residents of
the Sequoias was held on March 28, 1961, two months before the first
residents moved in. Mr.~G.~W.~Waldron served as president. Later in 1961,
the Residents Association was formed, and on December 7th the Association
held its first election of officers.
The Association consists of all residents of The Sequoias, Portola Valley, and
it helps in promoting a satisfying and pleasant community life. The
Association meets annually to review the year's activities and to make any
needed changes in its constitution and by-laws.
\nobreak
The main business of the Association is conducted by an elected
twelve-member Residents' Council that meets monthly and that represents
the interests of all residents. The Council elects a president,
vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, who together form the Executive
Committee of the Council. The Council works closely with The Sequoias'
administrators in formulating policies and in taking actions for the
benefit of all residents. It also confers with the elected officers of
the Township of Portola Valley and other agencies in the immediate area.
Much of the actual work of the Association is carried on by more than forty
committees of residents that organize and direct activities desired by
residents. Many residents serve on several committees. All residents are
encouraged to participate in committee work to make life for all Sequoians
productive and rewarding.
The Executive Committee members have been the following:

\centerline{\bfl In Appreciation}
\bigskip
As we celebrate the twenty-fifth birthday of The Sequoias, we residents
know how much we owe to those people who first dreamed of, and then
planned and built this beautiful place. We also know how much we owe the
pioneer residents of 1961, some of whom are still with us. They did much
to make The Sequoias what it is today. They established the first guide
lines; many we still follow. They created the cheerful, friendly
atmosphere that we all continue to enjoy today. They created the feeling
of community and of belonging, in a sense, to a larger family, where we
all feel a concern for each other. We can feel that we are truly at home.
Some of these simple, early established, customs still hold true -- a
friendly greeting to people one passes by, the use of first names, and the
willingness to help each other. All of the committees that work to keep
our surroundings beautiful and our lives full and interesting -- from
gardening and flower arrangements to Spanish lessons, the store, the
library, the entertainment committee, yes, even the swimming pool -- all of
these continue to be the result of our residents' effort.
Let us hope that during the next twenty-five years, The Sequoias will continue
to have the same friendly atmosphere that we enjoy today. If this spirit is
to be perpetuated, we, present and future residents, will have to do our part
in maintaining it.
As time passes, the activities that fill our days are sure to change. Some
will disappear, but if new activities, more in keeping with future times, take
their place, present and future residents will have to create them.
Listed elsewhere in this brochure, are the names of several among us who
are second-generation Sequoians. Among celebrants of the Fiftieth
Anniversary there may well be other second-generation, even third-generation,
Sequoians who will be following their parents and grandparents, some of
whom are with us today.
We wish all current and future residents well.
